In this class, we’ll work on the blocks that make up La Fin du Monde quilt pattern. We’ll practice curved blocks and half-square triangles. Libs will guide participants on how to successfully piece curves and how to sew the blocks together to ensure matching seams with some tips and tricks along the way. We’ll also cover the various ways this quilt can be quilted for maximum effect. Participants will get a good start on this quilt top and leave with the knowledge required to complete it at home. Check out #lafindumondequilt hashtag on Instagram for examples of this design.

This workshop includes pattern and paper templates.

This quilt can be made with a solid or pieced background, in three sizes (Small: 40”x48” Medium: 60”x72” Large: 80”x96”).

Location: John McGrath Hall, 97 Hensman Street South Perth WA 6151
Date: Saturday 5 October 2019

Libs Elliott Event 3: Workshop – Embrace the Chaos (An Exercise in Controlled Randomness)

Using only paper and pencils – no computers required! – Libs will walk students through a series of worksheet exercises that mimic the programming language she uses to generate quilt patterns. By using controlled elements in a random way, each participant will end up with a unique quilt pattern layout – no two Chaos Quilts are the same! As a group, we’ll discuss design flow and tweak our individual layouts. Then we’ll cut fabrics and work on piecing our designs, using provided block-building instructions. At the end of the class, each participant will leave with their own random geometric quilt design and will have the knowledge required to complete the project at home. Check out #embracethechaosquilt hashtag on Instagram for examples of this design.

Level: All Levels

Location: John McGrath Pavilion, 97 Hensman Street South Perth WA 6151
Date: Sunday 6 October 2019
Time: Doors open 8.30am, for a 9am start.
The workshop is 6 hours, however you are able to keep sewing until 4.30pm.

About Libs
Libs Elliott is a textile artist and designer exploring the intersection of technology and traditional craft by using generative design to build handmade quilts. A deep appreciation for craftsmanship, design history and future-focused applications are all reflected in her work. She studied Material Art & Design at OCAD University and received a B.A. in Cultural Studies at Trent University. She lives and works in Toronto, Canada.

Libs’ quilts are randomly designed using a programming language called Processing. This allows Libs to quickly edit the code and generate random compositions from simple geometric and traditional quilt block shapes.

This ongoing project is an exploration in how modern technology can transform a traditional and tactile craft into modern functional art without abandoning the inherent pleasures of handcrafted products. Many of us have become accustomed to identical mass-produced goods, but Libs believes many of us also crave personalised objects that communicate our individual identities. Libs’ goal is to underline the importance of craft as art in our contemporary age by producing bespoke modern heirlooms – just like quilts from a century ago, these are pieces that can be passed down through generations.

We look forward to welcoming you to these events in spring!
