Our August PMQG meet up was extra special. Not because of the amazing apricot balls and cupcakes, although they were very tasty… No, we were very fortunate to welcome our guest speaker Trish Wykman from Quilting Matters. Trish offers a wide variety of modern and contemporary quilt classes from her beautiful studio in the Perth Hills.
Trish was thrilled to be invited to present a mini workshop to the group and brought with her an abundance of beautiful quilts and wall hangings to illustrate her style and incredible sense of colour and tone.
The items she brought ranged in difficulty from the “Fresh Beginnings” quilt shown above, which she described as her beginner quilt, all the way through to the “Cut Loose” improvisational quilt below, which challenges the maker to consider balance and design as well as taking them out of their “traditional piecing” comfort zone!
There were many “oohs” and “aahs” as Trish circulated her Christmas tree wall hanging…and Advent calendar with the little shy stars…
Trish then generously shared her knowledge and skills with the group in a demonstration of her freestyle “Dark Nightz” block. She discussed not only the piecing of the block but also gave some very handy tips on cutting and piecing accurately, pressing seams crisply and choosing fabrics and threads that work together.
The finished product is a striking piece which everyone could aspire to. Indeed, some PMQG members are already working on their own versions of the “Dark Nightz” quilt!
The mini workshop gave everyone a taster of what it is like to take a class with Trish. Anyone who loves her style and technique (or the patterns of Jan Mullen, which she frequently uses) should feel free to contact her to sign up for her newsletter, which will inform them of upcoming classes and workshops.
