With jazz music, a score, or lead sheet, indicates basic chord changes, and arrangements of a song without specifying how the song should be performed. Now imagine a score written to perform a quilt!  In this ruler-free improv workshop participants will explore the key concept of how to set limits to support your creative flow. Finding your flow not only feels super good, it actually replaces the need of having to work from a plan. Participants will also learn basic ruler-free sewing techniques and leave with the confidence to create your own patchwork scores for future improvisational projects.

Sunday 22nd October Workshop: Get Your Wedge Curve On
Arrival from 9.30 for a 10am start (finish at 5pm)
Where: the beautiful Historic Ballroom of the Pagoda Spa & Resort (112 Melville Parade, Como)
Tea and coffee, lunch and afternoon tea are included.

Get your wedge-curve, mod-mood, groove on in this improvisational quilt-making workshop. Participants will commit one step at a time, as they explore advanced approaches to improvised patchwork and composition, develop a personal/intuitive language of colour, and learn ruler-free, wedge-curve, piecing techniques.

Other details about the venue
The venue offers lovely accommodation so you can choose to stay over at a special rate for workshop attendees.

Access is good (no stairs to contend with) and there is a lot of street parking nearby.  If you are attending one of the workshops, you can drive up to the front door and drop off your sewing machine to save having to carry it too far.

We’re hoping to have a pop up shop at our workshops, so those attending will be able to purchase a wide range of Kona solids.  More details to follow once all the arrangements are finalised.

For more information on the wonderful improvisation work of Sherri Lynn Wood please visit her website.

Pagoda Resort & Spa offers lovely accommodation, so you can choose to stay over at a special rate for workshop attendees. There’s a bar, a restaurant on site and it’s just a short walk to the Preston Street shops with a wide range of eateries and other shops.

We’ve got some rooms at Pagoda on hold for PMQG at a special rate.  For those interested we can send out more details but, to summarise, you can choose to stay overnight:

  • in a “superior room” (one king-sized bed with free high speed wifi and free minibar) for $180 a room per night
  • in a “deluxe room” (which can have a twin bed configuration, if desired), with free high speed wifi and free minibar, at a cost of $190 for the room, per night. So, if you have a sewing buddy to share with, that’s just $95 each to stay over Saturday night, or $190 for both Friday and Saturday nights, for example.

Complimentary secure parking is also provided for hotel guests availing of our accommodation offer.

The Improv Handbook for Modern Quilters
Sherri’s written a wonderful book (The Improv Handbook for Modern Quilters: A Guide to Creating, Quilting, and Living Courageously), so you might like to get one from your nearest bookstore or online. I bought myself a copy a few months ago and I highly recommend the book to accompany the workshops or if you want to try out improvisation for yourself.
