Fussy Cut Critters and Bugs

FUSSY CUT Design by Susanne Woods

Refer to Page 78 and 79 in MODERN BLOCKS

I have used a theme of Critters and Bugs keeping the background consistent i.e. white fabric.  Any “animals; birds; bugs and critters are welcome – they need to be small to fit into the 2 ½ inch squares.

The block is relatively easy – made up of 2 ½ inch blocks and strips.

 FUSSY CUTTING

Fussy cutting is a great technique but be aware that it does cause some wastage.

  1. Determine the fabric to be used.
  2. Feature blocks are 2 ½ inch square.  It is important that the “critter” is in the centre of the block.  Therefore the centre is 1 ¼ inches from each edge.
  3. I found it easier to identify the “critters” I wanted to include.  For this block you require 7 “fussy cut” 2 ½ inch blocks.
  4. You can either cut around the “critter with scissors and then use a small rule and cutter to cut the perfect square.  Alternatively, depending on your fabric you can cut strips that include your “critter” and then fussy cut with square rule and cutter.
  5. Take care when joining the pieces that you alternative the way you press the joins – for a flatter look they should alternate directions.
  6. Refer to the book on “How to Join” the 4 Units.

Have fun!!!

I have included photos of two blocks I have completed.
